In a significant move, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government in Punjab has announced the appointment of Anurag Verma, a 1993-batch IAS officer, as the new chief secretary. The appointment will come into effect from July 1, following the superannuation of the current chief secretary, Vijay Kumar Janjua, a 1989-batch IAS officer, on June 30.
Notably, the central government has not approved Janjua’s extension of service beyond June 30. It is anticipated that he will be accommodated as the chairman of the Punjab Public Service Commission (PPSC) post his retirement, as he has already submitted an application for the position.
Hailing from Patiala, Verma holds a Bachelor of Engineering degree in Electronics and Communication. He presently serves as the additional chief secretary of the home and justice department. The AAP government’s decision to appoint him as the chief secretary has resulted in the supersession of 11 senior IAS officers, seven of whom are currently serving in the state and four are on central deputation.
As of July 1, seven IAS officers senior to Verma, namely Anirudh Tewari and Anurag Agarwal (both from the 1990 batch), A Venu Prasad and Seema Jain (from the 1991 batch), and Sarvjit Singh, Raji P Shrivastava, and KAP Sinha (from the 1992 batch), will be designated as special chief secretaries.
Meanwhile, Vinni Mahajan (1987 batch), Ravneet Kaur and Anjali Bhawra (both from the 1988 batch), and Vijoy Kumar Singh (1990 batch) are presently serving on central deputation. It is worth noting that Mahajan and Tewari have previously held the position of chief secretary in Punjab during the Congress regime. Furthermore, Prasad, who currently serves as the additional chief secretary to Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, will also be superannuating on July 31.
