The city of Ahmedabad in Gujarat, India, is gearing up to host the highly anticipated Urban20 (U20) Mayoral Summit on July 7-8. The event is set to gather an impressive lineup of city leaders and mayors from across the G20 nations.
In addition to the esteemed mayors in attendance, the summit will welcome delegates representing various cities, knowledge partners, Indian and international organizations, academic institutes, as well as dignitaries from both the central and state governments. U20, operating under India’s G20 presidency, serves as an engagement group for collaborative efforts among cities, highlighting their crucial role in advancing global sustainable development.
According to an official statement released by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, “It is a city diplomacy initiative, comprising cities from G20 countries, emphasising the role of cities in taking forward the global agenda for sustainable development through collaboration among cities. Ahmedabad is the U20 chair for the current sixth cycle and is supported by the National Institute of Urban Affairs (NIUA) as the technical secretariat and the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) as the nodal ministry.”

Aside from productive discussions among the mayors, the upcoming Mayoral Summit will feature four thematic sessions focused on U20 priorities. Over 20 mayors from around the world, along with approximately 25 Indian mayors, will share their city-level actions and initiatives, sharing valuable experiences and insights.

Furthermore, the summit will witness the release of six white papers, each centering on one of the six U20 priorities, by esteemed dignitaries during these sessions. A dedicated round table on climate finance will also take place, providing an exclusive platform for mayors to engage in meaningful discussions.

The event’s agenda includes spotlight sessions that shed light on urban resilience, city preparedness for investments, inclusion, circular economy, and data-driven governance. These sessions will showcase the research and work conducted by various organizations in cities across India and the world.
An exhibition will be held during the summit, highlighting India’s urban accomplishments, notable projects, and innovative initiatives. Attendees will also have the opportunity to view selected films that raise awareness about the multifaceted impacts of climate change on urban areas and vice versa.
As part of the Mayoral Summit, participating mayors and delegates will have the chance to explore Ahmedabad’s historic streets and monuments, immersing themselves in the city’s vibrant culture. The U20 Udyan will witness a tree-planting activity by the mayors, while a visit to the Sabarmati Ashram is also planned.
The organizers have arranged a series of cultural programs and experiences, providing guests with a glimpse of Gujarat’s and India’s rich cultural heritage as a whole.
