Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal, who is on an official visit to the US, on Monday met with the CEOs of many large banking and investment firms to explore investment potential in India and how to further improve the two countries’ trade relations.

Mr Goyal tweeted that he “exchanged ideas on improving the company’s role in decarbonisation & producing sustainable buildings in India” after meeting Johnson Controls Chairman and CEO George Oliver, a developer of smart and sustainable building solutions. They also talked about using artificial intelligence, the internet of things, and research and development to create security products.

He highlighted the expansion of India’s investment environment, including infrastructure, renewables, and green hydrogen, in his meeting with Stephen Schwarzman, the CEO and Chairman of the world-renowned investment management firm Blackstone. According to him, they discussed the “deepening of India’s capital markets and private equity ecosystem.” Goyal met Henry Kravis, co-founder and co-executive chairman of the international investment firm Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co., and Michael Miebach, CEO of Mastercard.

In a tweet after his meeting with Kravis, Goyal said he exchanged views on “attractive investment opportunities in India including in infrastructure, manufacturing and startup incubators.” Later, at a business roundtable organised by the US-India Business Council at Nasdaq, Goyal “spoke about India’s remarkable economic transformation and huge potential. Stronger India-US trade and surging crossflow of investments are adding new value and dynamism to our bilateral partnership.” Earlier in the day, Goyal addressed a roundtable of stakeholders from industry, think tanks and academia at the Council on Foreign Relations.
