Seasoned bureaucrat Nilam Sawhney has been appointed as the new Chief Secretary of Andhra Pradesh by an order issued by the General Administration Department.

With this appointment, Sawhney has become the first woman Chief Secretary of the redrawn state of Andhra Pradesh and has been given repatriation to her parent cadre following a request by the state government. She is presently serving as Secretary, Department of Social Justice & Empowerment, Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment.

Her predecessor, Subrahmanyam’s controversial exit came after a spat with another senior bureaucrat, Praveen Prakash, presently serving as the Principal Secretary to Chief Minister Jagan Mohan Reddy.

Subrahmanyam was posted as the Director-General of Human Resources Development Institute, and is due to retire in five months.
