1984 batch IAS officer Nilam Sawhney appointed Andhra Chief Secretary

Seasoned bureaucrat Nilam Sawhney has been appointed as the new Chief Secretary of Andhra Pradesh by an order issued by the General Administration Department.

Sawhney, a 1984 batch Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer of Andhra Pradesh cadre, will be replacing Neerabh Kumar Prasad, Chief Commissioner of Land Administration, who was holding the additional charge as the Chief Secretary since the controversial exit of L.V. Subrahmanyam in the first week of this month.

With this appointment, Sawhney has become the first woman Chief Secretary of the redrawn state of Andhra Pradesh and has been given repatriation to her parent cadre following a request by the state government. She is presently serving as Secretary, Department of Social Justice & Empowerment, Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment.

Her predecessor, Subrahmanyam’s controversial exit came after a spat with another senior bureaucrat, Praveen Prakash, presently serving as the Principal Secretary to Chief Minister Jagan Mohan Reddy.

Subrahmanyam was posted as the Director-General of Human Resources Development Institute, and is due to retire in five months.
