R S Sharma gets extension as TRAI Chief for two years

Ram Sewak Sharma, who drew controversy by posting his Aadhaar number on twitter and challenging to get information about him, has been   reappointed chairman of telecom regulator TRAI for two years.

He will hold the office till 2020.

A Jharkhand cadre officer, he joined civil services in 1978. He was the then District Magistrate of Begusarai in Bihar.

His career has seen stints with various departments, most of them related to information technology.


He was the director general and mission director of the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) for four years (2009-2013). He even wrote the first software for UIDAI for enrolment.

He was appointed as the Secretary of the Department of Electronics and Information Technology where he was spreaheading the ‘Digital India’ campaign and various projects under it.

 Sharma holds a masters degree in mathematics from IIT Kanpur.
