He is a 1978 batch IAS officer of Jharkhand cadre.

The government asked Sharma on 1st of July to handle DoT for a period of three months or until a new order is passed. The order came following retirement of the erstwhile DoT Secretary MF Farooqui on June 30.

Sharma takes charge of DoT at a time when the telecom industry expects the BJP-led government to expedite steps to ring in favourable merger and acquisition rules, pave the way for spectrum trading and sharing. Besides, the industry also expects clarity on availability and auction of airwaves, including 3G spectrum.
