Six lakh Handheld Electronic Devices for BPL Census

In an effort to expedite Census and minimize its error, Union Ministry of Rural Development has planned to collect digital data of BPL families across the country, with the help of 6 lakh hand held electronic devices.

In an effort to expedite Census and minimize its error, Union Ministry of Rural Development has planned to collect digital data of BPL families across the country, with the help of 6 lakh hand held electronic devices. The errors in BPL database result in lot of inefficiencies and leakages into the delivery of subsidies to the poor section of the population. State owned Bharat Electronics Ltd (BEL) is assembling the hand held devices for the Census. The digital data collection would enable the government link the BPL list with the national population register (NPR). The hand-held devices will have in built NPR data so that there is no duplication. Reportedly, the ministry will approach the Union cabinet with a proposal for beginning the census either in June or July.
