In an attempt to revolutionise local government by providing e-Government services to citizens, the Government of Greece has launched a Digital Municipalities project which is aimed at modernising municipality services and bringing them into the e-Government age.

This new project aims at familiarising municipality staff with the new technologies, providing training on how to use the new hardware and software and how to put them into practice. According to the Greek municipalities, the current resources are not enough to cope up with the needs of the future and they need to modernise in order to survive and there can be no better way to modernise than to go digital.

The new project is coordinated by both the Institute of Regional Self Government and the Central Union of Municipalities and Communities of Greece and would help in e-Governance process. Under this project, web portals would be created from where all citizens would be able to request and receive certificates and official documents signed electronically. These will also enable them to make complaints and suggestions and get answers to their inquiries.
