DoT setting up another panel on spectrum allocation

The Department of Telecom has constituted a new committee, headed by its member technology K Sridhara to study the spectrum panel's recommendations. This new committee will decide on the right method of allocating additional spectrum to the existing mobile operators.

The technical committee will specify the method of allotting incremental spectrum. The panel had asked the government to take a final call on this issue. Meanwhile, the GSM operators including Bharti Airtel, Vodafone Essar, Spice and Idea Cellular have decided to file a petition in the High Court against the decision of the telecom tribunal not to grant a stay on allocation of fresh spectrum to new players. The Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI), the body representing GSM players has served a legal notice to the Government informing about their intention.
