Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd. (BSNL) will lay fibre optic cables across Myanmar (Burma) in collaboration with Telecommunications Consultants India Ltd (TCIL). This would be the first step to set up a land link between India and South Asia, which will pass through Kuala Lampur and terminate in Singapore.

The Myanmar project will improve connectivity in the country as well as improve communications links between India and Myanmar. In the first of the project, TCIL will lay a 500 km fibre from Tamu along the border with India to Mandlay, the second largest city in Myanmar and it would be completed by the year end. The Department of Telecom (DoT) has asked BSNL to examine the business case for acquisition of this link.
