All one needs to track a lost mobile phone is to SMS his/her international mobile equipment identification (IMIE) number. The IMIE number is inscribed on every handset. The mobile handset, either lost or stolen, may be tracked as soon as it gets activated.
When a SIM is inserted on a stolen or a lost mobile, the service provider will get the notified IMEI number, hence it can be tracked or blocked. For this, the owner has to submit his mobile IMEI on the website or through SMS.
This is a brainchild of Indian Institute of Management's Ahmedabad, (IIMA) Centre for e-governance (CEG) along with the office of the superintendent of police Ahmedabad rural. The project will get operational online in Ahmedabad city of India within a month. There are only administrative formalities such as getting a domain name has to be completed.
