Shortly, India will switch over to e-Passport system. The Central Passport Organisation will start issuing e-Passports from next year.

 

Initially, Government will issue Some 25,000 to 30,000 e-Passports. Indian e-passport would look like an ordinary passport with an embedded electronic chip. The chip would contain the photograph, fingerprint and personal information of the holder so that the passport could not be duplicated. According to .R. Dash, Chief Passport Officer and Joint Secretary in the Ministry of External Affairs, the government is planning to issue e-Passports to diplomats and officials. More than 35 countries have already deployed the e-Passport system, named biometric passports.
