BSNL Towers in Semi-Urban Areas to be Leased Out
In order to expand broadband connectivity to rural areas under the purview of Universal Service Obligation Fund (USOF), the Indian Telegraph Rules have been amended. The Indian Telegraph has added stream IV under the title ‘Provision of broadband connectivity to villages in a phased manner’.

According to the 11th five year plan, the target of connecting people has been set as 500 million of the government of India in 2010 and 650 million by 2012.
The Government of Singapore is planning to launch Next Generation National Broadband Network (Next Gen NBN), which will provide ultra-high speed connectivity by 2015. The Government will open bid for all interested parties to submit their bid to design build and operate the passive infrastructure layer of the Next Gen NBN.
India Government has taken the mobile services project under the Universal Services Obligation and it is expected to cover 2.5 lakh remote villages across the country.
