India is making significant strides in renewable energy adoption, with PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana leading the charge. Launched on February 15, 2024, by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, this ambitious initiative aims to install rooftop solar panels on one crore households by March 2027, providing free electricity and promoting sustainable energy practices.
Progress and Milestones
In just nine months since its inception, the scheme has achieved 6.3 lakh installations, averaging 70,000 installations per month—a tenfold increase from pre-scheme figures. The roadmap anticipates reaching 10 lakh installations by March 2025, doubling to 20 lakh by October 2025, and ultimately achieving the one crore target by March 2027.
Key Benefits
- Free Electricity for Households: By installing subsidized rooftop solar panels, households can significantly reduce or eliminate their electricity bills, leading to substantial savings.
- Government Savings: The widespread adoption of solar energy is projected to save the government approximately ₹75,000 crore annually in electricity costs.
- Environmental Impact: Transitioning to solar power reduces carbon emissions, aligning with India’s commitment to environmental sustainability.
- Promotion of Renewable Energy: The scheme fosters the use of renewable energy sources, contributing to a cleaner energy mix.
Subsidy Structure
The scheme offers subsidies based on a household’s average monthly electricity consumption and the corresponding suitable rooftop solar plant capacity:

Average Monthly Consumption (Units) | Suitable Solar Plant Capacity | Subsidy Amount |
0-150 | 1-2 kW | ₹30,000 to ₹60,000 |
150-300 | 2-3 kW | ₹60,000 to ₹78,000 |
Above 300 | Above 3 kW | ₹78,000 |
Application Process
Households can apply for the subsidy through the National Portal, where they can also select a suitable vendor for installing rooftop solar systems. The portal provides tools such as a benefits calculator, vendor ratings, and detailed information to assist in decision-making. Additionally, collateral-free, low-interest loans at approximately 7% interest are available for installing systems up to 3 kW.

Eligibility Criteria
The scheme is open to all households across India, with a focus on making renewable energy accessible and affordable. Priority is given to regions with high solar potential and households with higher electricity consumption to maximize impact.
Impact and Future Outlook
The PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana is poised to add 30 GW of solar capacity through residential rooftop installations, significantly advancing India’s renewable energy targets. Over a 25-year lifespan, these systems are expected to generate 1,000 billion units of electricity and reduce CO2 emissions by 720 million tonnes. Moreover, the initiative is anticipated to create approximately 17 lakh direct jobs across sectors such as manufacturing, logistics, supply chain, and installation.
The PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana exemplifies India’s commitment to sustainable development and energy innovation. By empowering households to harness solar energy, the scheme not only provides economic benefits but also contributes to environmental conservation and energy security. As the program progresses towards its ambitious targets, it stands as a testament to the transformative potential of renewable energy initiatives in shaping a sustainable future.
