Hyundai Motor Group has entered into strategic partnerships with three leading Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) to advance research in batteries and electrification, reinforcing its commitment to strengthening the electric vehicle (EV) ecosystem in India.
The collaboration involves IIT Delhi, IIT Bombay, and IIT Madras, with plans to establish a Hyundai Center of Excellence (CoE) at IIT Delhi. This initiative will be supported through sponsorships from Hyundai Motor Group, focusing on innovations tailored to India’s unique market needs.
Hyundai announced an investment of approximately $7 million over five years (2025–2029) to conduct joint research on battery technologies and electrification with these premier institutions. Beyond batteries, the partnership aims to explore advanced areas like software solutions and hydrogen fuel cell technologies, marking a comprehensive approach to sustainable mobility.

Speaking on the collaboration, Naksup Sung, Head of Hyundai Motor Group’s R&D Planning and Coordination Center, expressed enthusiasm about the initiative. “We are excited to partner with IITs, renowned for their exceptional research and education. The Hyundai CoE will foster innovation and nurture a robust network of talented individuals from India’s academic community, contributing to the future growth of the EV sector,” said Sung.

The Hyundai CoE will engage with IIT Delhi’s Centre for Automotive Research and Tribology (CART), India’s sole EV-focused research institute. This collaboration will enable joint research projects, academic-industrial cooperation, and exchanges between experts in India and Korea. The initiative aims to accelerate technological advancements while building human resources in EV and electrification fields.
This partnership aligns with Hyundai’s broader vision to establish a thriving EV ecosystem in India, complementing government policies aimed at boosting EV adoption. The initiative follows the successful $3 billion IPO of Hyundai Motor India Limited, underlining the Group’s growing footprint in the country.
Through these academic collaborations, Hyundai Motor Group is taking significant strides toward pioneering EV research and development in India, fostering innovation to meet the nation’s mobility demands while contributing to a sustainable future.
