Guwahati: Assam’s agriculture sector has witnessed remarkable growth, achieving an 85% increase in exports over the past six years, according to Atul Bora, the state’s Minister for Agriculture and Horticulture. Speaking at the North East Rural Conclave organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) on October 23, 2024, Bora highlighted the critical role of supportive government policies in driving this growth and the potential for export-oriented farming in the region.
The North East Rural Conclave, held in Guwahati, served as a key platform for discussing rural development as a vital factor for the socio-economic advancement of the North Eastern Region, which is currently experiencing rapid economic transformation. The conclave brought together stakeholders from various sectors to address the rising demand for agricultural and non-agricultural products and advancements in the service sector.
Bora emphasised the importance of continued collaboration between government departments and stakeholders to sustain the region’s growth. He pointed out that access to financial resources is essential for rural development, particularly in a region where agriculture remains the primary source of livelihood. The infusion of capital is crucial to adopting modern farming techniques, investing in sustainable practices, and improving productivity.
Munindra Sarma, Secretary of the Panchayat & Rural Development Department, Government of Assam, highlighted several key initiatives launched by the state to support rural communities. These initiatives, including rural housing, job creation programs, livelihood missions, and women empowerment projects, are aimed at improving the ease of living and fostering sustainability within the rural socio-economic ecosystem.
Loken Das, Chief General Manager of NABARD, added that the North Eastern Region offers vast opportunities, particularly in addressing local demand gaps in agriculture and horticulture. He stressed the need for better post-production efforts and diaspora marketing strategies to maximise this potential.

Additionally, Ashwin Noronha, Chief Airport Officer at Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport, emphasised the importance of utilising the state’s new wide-body aircraft and cargo facilities to enhance the export of regional products. He urged the development of strategies to capitalise on the upgraded infrastructure, ensuring a balance between imports and exports for the region.
