Solar Energy

Gujarat has become a game-changer in the solar energy scene, taking bold steps to bring solar cell technology from research labs to full-scale production. The state is on its way to establishing itself as a major player in India’s renewable energy landscape, helping reach the country towards its goal of energy independence.

IMPACT OF PLI SCHEME ON GUJARAT’S SOLAR MANUFACTURING AND ENERGY SECTOR

Backed by policies like the Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme, a program in India that offers financial incentives to boost domestic manufacturing, investments, and exports. Gujarat’s solar goals also perfectly align with the nation’s “Aatmanirbhar Bharat” (self-reliant India) vision, which aims to reduce dependence on foreign imports and strengthen domestic industries.

Key impacts:

  • More Local Manufacturing: The scheme provides incentives for solar module production in Gujarat, thereby reducing its import reliance and enhancing local capacity.
  • Supporting Solar Expansion: Ambitious Solar Energy Targets of Gujarat- The scheme aligns with the country’s 280 GW solar goal by 2030.
  • Employment: The policy has potential to create employment in the manufacturing and allied sectors, contributing to the state’s economic growth.
  • Push for Innovation: Emphasis on high-efficiency modules could make Gujarat the hub of innovation in
    solar technology.
  • Energy Security: By reducing imports, the policy strengthens Gujarat’s energy independence and allows it to contribute to greener growth.

SOLAR MANUFACTURING HUB: DHOLERA SPECIAL INDUSTRIAL REGION (DSIR)

At the heart of Gujarat’s solar revolution is the Dholera Special Industrial Region (DSIR), a mega industrial hub and a part of the Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor in the making. Spread over 920 sq km, it is being developed as a smart city with world-class infrastructure.
The government has proactively turned DSIR into a prime location for renewable energy production. With state and central governments offering significant support, DSIR is emerging as a hub for solar manufacturing. These incentives have successfully attracted leading energy companies to set up large-scale manufacturing plants and, build the foundation for a thriving solar industry in the state.

ReNEW POWER’S VERTICALLY INTEGRATED FACILITY

One of the most exciting developments is ReNew Power’s stateof-the-art manufacturing plant in DSIR. As one of India’s top renewable energy companies, ReNew Power is setting up a vertically integrated facility – capable of producing 2 GW solar cells and modules yearly. The distinguished feature of this project is its incorporation of advanced technology, such as:

  • Monocrystalline PERC Technology: This is an advanced type of solar cell designed to convert sunlight into electricity more efficiently than older types of solar cells. The “PERC” stands for Passivated Emitter and Rear Contact, indicating that the solar cells are designed to harness sunlight, even under low-light condition. This enhancement allows the solar panels to generate more energy, resulting in higher energy production compared to conventional cells.
  • Large Wafer Technology: In solar cell manufacturing, wafers are thin slices of material that capture sunlight. Using larger wafers requires fewer individual cells to create a solar panel. This lowers production costs by requiring fewer materials and less time to construct the panels, while still maintaining or even enhancing their energy capture efficiency.
  • Industry 4.0 Standards: This refers to using modern, smart technologies in manufacturing. ReNew Power uses automation, real-time data monitoring, and smart systems that allow the factory to run more efficiently. These technologies allow the facility to operate efficiently with minimal interruptions, leading to higher production of solar panels in a shorter time frame, reduced costs, and improved quality assurance.

COMMITMENT TO SUSTAINABILITY

Sustainability is a core focus of Gujarat’s initiative in advancing solar energy. ReNew Power’s manufacturing process is designed to reduce its carbon footprint by using renewable energy to power the production line and integrating energy-efficient practices. This commitment to green production supports global decarbonisation efforts and sets a standard for future energy projects in India.

REDUCING IMPORT RELIANCE: AATMANIRBHAR BHARAT

One of the driving goals behind Gujarat’s solar initiatives is to cut down on India’s reliance on imports, particularly from China, which dominates the global solar module market. By ramping up domestic production of solar cells and modules, Gujarat is helping India meet its ambitious renewable energy targets and strengthening its self-reliance in critical industries. This is a key element of the “Aatmanirbhar Bharat” vision, which focuses on empowering domestic industries and reducing dependence on foreign products.

ECONOMIC GROWTH AND JOB CREATION

The solar revolution in Gujarat is not just about energy but also economic growth. Establishing large-scale solar manufacturing plants is anticipated to create thousands of jobs in manufacturing and supporting industries. This wave of employment will help stimulate the local economy and make Gujarat a hotspot for solar innovation and
investment. The ripple effect of these developments is expected to boost India’s competitiveness in the global renewable energy market.

Gujarat’s initiative for solar cell technology is a transformative step in India’s renewable energy journey. Gujarat is becoming a key player in the solar industry with its innovative manufacturing approaches, focus on sustainability, and alignment with the “Aatmanirbhar Bharat” initiative. By reducing reliance on imports, creating jobs, and boosting the local economy, the state is advancing its development and contributing significantly to India’s broader energy security and sustainability goals.
