The Yogi government in Uttar Pradesh is set to nearly double its waste processing capacity from 15,000 tonnes to 27,000 tonnes per day to tackle the challenges posed by rapid urbanisation. Under Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s vision, the state is also developing parks using waste materials as part of the ‘Waste to Wonder’ scheme.
Urban Development Minister AK Sharma provided detailed information in the State Assembly, highlighting Uttar Pradesh’s leading position in waste management. Sharma noted that the state generates 20,000 tonnes of solid waste daily, with 15,000 tonnes currently being processed. He emphasised that the state plans to increase this capacity by an additional 12,000 tonnes per day.
Currently, Uttar Pradesh has 933 Material Recovery Facilities (MRF) centres, with 711 operational and actively processing solid waste. Sharma further mentioned that processed waste is being used innovatively in road construction. Notably, the roads of the New High Court and Police Headquarters in Lucknow are built using processed urban waste.

The five-acre ‘UP Darshan Park’ in Lucknow stands as an exemplary model of innovative waste management. Other cities like Agra, Gorakhpur, and Mirzapur have also seen the development of Happiness Parks and Waste to Wonder Parks.
