In a significant move to bolster the nation’s hydroelectric power capabilities, the Ministry of Power (MoP) has unveiled plans to initiate 13 hydroelectric projects (HEPs) in Arunachal Pradesh. Collectively, these projects are poised to provide a staggering capacity of 13,000 MW. During a recent evaluation of the progress made on the 2,000 MW Lower Subansiri HEP in Arunachal Pradesh, the Union Minister for Power and New and Renewable Energy emphasized that the total investment required for these 13 projects amounts to Rs 1,400 billion. The Lower Subansiri HEP is scheduled to commence operations between 2023 and 2024.

Highlighting the paramount role of HEPs in facilitating the nation’s energy transition, the Union Minister underscored that, despite India’s substantial solar and wind power capacity, achieving uninterrupted round-the-clock renewable energy remains a challenge without the vital contribution of hydroelectricity. Furthermore, the Minister revealed that construction is currently underway for five HEPs in Jammu & Kashmir.

It’s worth noting that India’s present hydroelectric capacity stands at 47,000 MW, constituting 35 percent of the country’s available hydroelectric potential. In stark contrast, developed nations have harnessed around 70 percent to 80 percent of their accessible hydroelectric potential.

Over the course of the past nine and a half years, India has witnessed an impressive increase in power capacity, adding a remarkable 190,000 MW to its grid. Additionally, there are approximately 70,000 MW under construction in the renewable sector and 27,000 MW in thermal power, highlighting the nation’s commitment to expanding its energy infrastructure.
