The drive to issue unique identification (UID) numbers to residents is gathering pace in the city with close to nine lakh in a population of 1.68 crore already enrolled and 2.42 lakh provided with their 12-digit numbers. The state government has set October as the deadline for completing the process of registration.
While the project has received an enthusiastic response from all sections of society, the poorest and most vulnerable sections, such as pavement dwellers and transgenders, will gain the most from the exercise. In fact, the UID will be the first government-issued document to recognize transgenders as a third sex.
The settled public may look upon the UID number as just another proof of identity, in addition to documents such as PAN card, driving licence etc, but for poor migrants who are harassed at every step
