Dalai Lama Writes Foreword to IAS Officer Rakesh Kumar Prajapati’s Debut Novel

The debut novel of Himachal Pradesh-cadre IAS officer Rakesh Kumar Prajapati, titled Lighter Than Yesterday, was released on Friday by Rupa Publications India. The author presented the first copy to Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama at McLeodganj, who has also written the foreword for the book.

The novel explores family relationships, personal ambition and the search for happiness, using the bond between a grandfather and his grandson to examine what gives life meaning beyond professional achievements.

A Story About Family and Life Choices

Lighter Than Yesterday focuses on how relationships between generations can shape a person’s outlook, offering emotional support, wisdom and a sense of belonging. Through the central relationship between a grandfather and his grandson, Prajapati reflects on the importance of family connections and the lessons people gain from their elders.

The narrative also examines the pressures associated with ambition and the sacrifices people make while pursuing success. It raises questions about whether professional recognition alone can bring lasting happiness and encourages readers to consider what makes life genuinely fulfilling.

Examining the Aspirations of Young Indians

The novel touches on the experiences of young Indians who devote years to competitive examinations in pursuit of prestigious careers. Civil services, particularly the IAS and IPS, are often viewed as major professional achievements.

Against this backdrop, Prajapati explores the choices people face after reaching their career goals, including why some may reconsider or leave positions they have worked hard to secure. The story invites readers to reflect on personal priorities, fulfilment and the courage needed to make difficult life decisions.

Rakesh Kumar Prajapati’s Administrative Career

Prajapati is a 2012-batch IAS officer of the Himachal Pradesh cadre. He has served in various districts and state government assignments and is currently a Director in the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) under the Central Government.

The author draws on his early experiences with his grandfather to bring a personal dimension to the novel’s central relationship, connecting its themes of family, ambition and self-discovery.
