The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has approved a six-month extension for Gurdeep Singh as the Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) of NTPC Limited, ensuring continuity in the leadership of India’s largest integrated power utility.
According to an order issued by the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) on 27 July 2026, Gurdeep Singh will continue in the role on a contract basis from 1 August 2026, following the completion of his current tenure on 31 July 2026.
ACC Clears Ministry of Power Proposal
The extension has been approved based on a proposal submitted by the Ministry of Power. Under the order, Gurdeep Singh will continue as CMD for six months, or until a regular incumbent assumes charge, or until further orders, whichever is earlier.
The decision is aimed at ensuring leadership continuity while the government completes the process of appointing a full-time CMD for NTPC.
Selection Process for New CMD Still in Progress
The process to appoint a regular CMD is currently underway. As part of the selection exercise, the Public Enterprises Selection Board (PESB) interviewed 18 candidates earlier this month. However, a final decision on the appointment is yet to be announced.
The temporary extension will help maintain stability at NTPC as the company continues to execute major power generation and clean energy projects.
Gurdeep Singh Becomes Longest-Serving Central PSU Chief
With this extension, Gurdeep Singh is set to become the longest-serving Chairman and Managing Director of a Central Public Sector Enterprise (CPSE).
He has been leading NTPC since February 2016 and has overseen a period of significant growth and diversification for the company.
During his tenure, NTPC has expanded its generation capacity, strengthened its thermal power portfolio and accelerated investments in renewable energy and emerging clean technologies.
Focus on Energy Transition
Under Gurdeep Singh’s leadership, NTPC has expanded beyond conventional power generation into several new areas, including:
- Solar and wind energy
- Green hydrogen
- Energy storage
- Nuclear power
- E-mobility
The company has also continued to strengthen its conventional generation capacity while supporting India’s transition towards cleaner and more sustainable sources of energy.
