The Delhi government is set to introduce the capital’s first solar tree at the Delhi Secretariat as part of a pilot project aimed at promoting clean energy solutions in space-constrained urban areas. The initiative, being implemented by the Power Department in coordination with various civic agencies, will assess the feasibility of vertical solar infrastructure before expanding the concept to other parts of the city.

The Delhi Secretariat has been chosen for the pilot as it serves as the administrative headquarters of the state government, housing the offices of Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, cabinet ministers and senior officials.
Pilot Project to Test Innovative Solar Technology
The project is designed to explore new ways of generating renewable energy in densely populated urban areas where conventional rooftop or ground-mounted solar installations may not be practical.

Unlike traditional solar systems, a solar tree features a vertical steel structure with branch-like extensions that hold photovoltaic panels at different angles. This arrangement allows multiple solar panels to capture maximum sunlight while occupying very little ground space.
Officials believe the pilot will provide valuable operational data and help determine the technology’s suitability for wider deployment across the city.

Expansion Planned Across Public Spaces
If the pilot proves successful, the government plans to install similar solar trees at major traffic intersections, public squares, commercial districts and other high-footfall locations.
The initiative is expected to support Delhi’s broader renewable energy goals while making better use of limited urban land for clean power generation.
Battery Storage to Power Civic Facilities
Electricity generated by the solar tree will be stored in an integrated battery energy storage system located at the base of the structure.
The stored power will be used to operate nearby public infrastructure such as streetlights, electric vehicle charging stations and other civic utilities. This decentralised approach is expected to reduce dependence on the conventional electricity grid while ensuring a reliable local power supply.
Designed for Energy and Public Use
Beyond renewable energy generation, the solar tree will also serve as a public utility. The structure will include shaded seating areas, allowing pedestrians to rest while integrating sustainable infrastructure into the urban landscape.
Officials say the project demonstrates how clean energy solutions can be combined with public amenities without requiring additional land.
Supporting Delhi’s Clean Energy Vision
The pilot forms part of the Delhi government’s ongoing efforts to expand renewable energy adoption under its evolving solar policy framework. By introducing compact, technology-driven solutions such as solar trees, the government aims to improve urban sustainability while meeting the city’s growing energy needs.
