PM Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday became the first Indian Prime Minister to address the Parliament of Indonesia, marking a significant milestone in the relationship between the two countries. Speaking before Indonesian lawmakers in Jakarta, he called for a stronger and future-focused partnership built on shared history, democratic values, and common aspirations for growth and prosperity.

The historic address highlighted the growing strategic ties between India and Indonesia and outlined a roadmap for deeper cooperation across multiple sectors.

Historic Address Marks New Chapter in Bilateral Relations

During his address, Prime Minister Modi thanked Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto for his presence and expressed gratitude to Parliament Speaker Puan Maharani for the invitation. He also conveyed greetings on behalf of the people of India.

Describing India as the “Mother of Democracy,” the Prime Minister said both countries share a long-standing commitment to democratic values and have built a relationship rooted in trust, mutual respect, and centuries of cultural and maritime connections.

Shared Heritage Forms Strong Foundation

Highlighting more than two millennia of civilisational links, PM Modi said India and Indonesia have been connected through trade, culture, faith, and the exchange of ideas across the Indian Ocean.

He noted that the Indian philosophy of “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam” (The World is One Family) and Indonesia’s national motto “Bhinneka Tunggal Ika” (Unity in Diversity) reflect the shared values that continue to strengthen the partnership between the two nations.

According to the Prime Minister, these common ideals provide a strong foundation for expanding cooperation in the years ahead.

Call for Stronger Cooperation Across Key Sectors

PM Modi emphasised that India and Indonesia have similar development aspirations and can work together to achieve their long-term national goals of Viksit Bharat 2047 and Golden Indonesia 2045.

He called for greater collaboration in areas including:

  • Trade and investment
  • Connectivity
  • Food and energy security
  • Digital Public Infrastructure
  • Emerging technologies
  • Maritime cooperation

He also reaffirmed India’s commitment to working closely with Indonesia to strengthen the voice of the Global South and promote a free, open, inclusive, and rules-based Indo-Pacific region.

‘Ganga-Mahakam Vision’ Proposed for Future Partnership

To further deepen bilateral ties, the Prime Minister proposed a new framework titled the “Ganga-Mahakam Vision.”

The proposed vision seeks to strengthen cooperation by building on the countries’ shared civilisational heritage while expanding collaboration in development, security, maritime connectivity, and global governance.

PM Modi said the initiative would guide the next phase of India-Indonesia relations and help both nations address future opportunities together.

Historic Moment for India-Indonesia Relations

Following his address, the Prime Minister described the opportunity as a great honour in a message shared on social media. He said India and Indonesia are connected by centuries of shared history, culture, and people-to-people ties, expressing confidence that the partnership would continue to grow through friendship, cooperation, and shared prosperity.

The Ministry of External Affairs also described the address as a historic milestone in bilateral relations, noting that it reflects the growing Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between the two countries.
