The Gujarat Government has appointed Gyanender Singh Malik as the new Director General of Police (DGP) of the state, placing one of Gujarat’s most experienced police officers at the helm of the state police force.
A 1993-batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer of the Gujarat cadre, Malik was serving as the Police Commissioner of Ahmedabad City before being selected for the top policing position. He succeeds Dr K L N Rao, a 1991-batch IPS officer, who had been holding the charge of DGP on an interim basis.
Appointment Finalised After Consideration of Senior Officers
The appointment was made after the state government considered a panel of senior IPS officers for the position. Three officers were reportedly in contention for the post — Dr K L N Rao, Gyanender Singh Malik, and Neerja Gotru, a 1993-batch IPS officer currently serving as Director General of Police, Police Recruitment Board.
Following the selection process, the government chose Malik to lead the Gujarat Police at a time when law enforcement agencies are increasingly focusing on technology-driven policing, public safety, and crime prevention.
Experienced Officer Takes Charge
Gyanender Singh Malik brings more than three decades of policing experience to the role. Over the course of his career, he has served in several important assignments across Gujarat and has been associated with key areas of policing, including law and order management, crime control, intelligence gathering and urban policing.
His tenure as Ahmedabad Police Commissioner is particularly noteworthy, as he oversaw policing in one of the country’s largest and fastest-growing urban centres. During this period, he handled major responsibilities related to public security, traffic management, crime investigation and large-scale public events.
Key Role Ahead for Gujarat Police
As the state’s top police officer, Malik will be responsible for providing strategic leadership to the Gujarat Police and overseeing law enforcement operations across the state.
His responsibilities will include strengthening public safety measures, improving policing capabilities, enhancing cybercrime preparedness, and ensuring effective coordination among various law enforcement agencies.
The DGP also plays a crucial role in shaping policing policies, implementing reforms and guiding the force in addressing emerging security challenges.
Focus on Modern and Citizen-Centric Policing
With Gujarat continuing to witness rapid urbanisation and economic growth, the role of the police force has become increasingly important in maintaining law and order while supporting a secure environment for citizens and businesses.
Officials believe Malik’s extensive administrative and field experience will help further strengthen policing standards and support ongoing efforts to modernise the force through technology, improved training and community engagement.
Leadership Transition at the Top
The appointment marks an important leadership transition for the Gujarat Police. Malik takes charge at a time when police organisations across the country are adapting to evolving challenges such as cybercrime, digital fraud, organised crime and urban security management.
With his experience in senior leadership positions and operational policing, he is expected to guide the force in maintaining public confidence while continuing efforts to enhance safety, efficiency and accountability across the state.
His appointment as Director General of Police places him at the forefront of Gujarat’s law enforcement system, with the responsibility of leading one of the country’s largest and most significant state police forces.
