V D Satheesan

Congress leader V D Satheesan is set to take oath as the next Chief Minister of Kerala on May 18 after being unanimously elected as the leader of the Congress Legislature Party (CLP), marking a major political transition in the state following the United Democratic Front’s (UDF) decisive electoral victory.

The decision was taken during a CLP meeting held at the Assembly complex in Thiruvananthapuram, where Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) chief Sunny Joseph proposed Satheesan’s name, which was seconded by senior Congress leader Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan.

Senior Congress leader Ramesh Chennithala, who could not attend the meeting, extended his support through a letter backing Satheesan’s leadership.

Leadership Decision Follows Strong UDF Mandate

The CLP meeting came shortly after the All India Congress Committee (AICC) formally named Satheesan as the chief ministerial candidate following the UDF’s emphatic win in the Kerala Assembly elections.

The alliance secured 102 seats in the 140-member Assembly, bringing an end to a decade-long Left rule in the state.

Soon after being elected CLP leader, Satheesan, accompanied by senior Congress leaders including Sunny Joseph and AICC Kerala in-charge Deepa Dasmunsi, met Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar and formally staked claim to form the next government.

Focus on ‘New Kerala’ Vision

Addressing the media after the meeting, Satheesan expressed gratitude to the party leadership and described the responsibility entrusted to him as significant.

He said the new government would work towards improving people’s quality of life and focus on building a “new Kerala” and ushering in a “puthu yugam” or new era.

Satheesan emphasized that the electoral victory belonged not to an individual but to party workers and alliance partners who worked collectively throughout the campaign.

He also called the chief ministerial role a “divine gift” and stressed the need for teamwork in governance.

Acknowledges Senior Leaders and Team Effort

Satheesan thanked senior Congress leaders including Rahul Gandhi, K C Venugopal and Ramesh Chennithala for their support during the election campaign and government formation process.

He said he would continue to consult senior leaders, including Venugopal and Chennithala, both of whom were also seen as contenders for the top post.

On questions regarding the time taken to announce the chief ministerial candidate, Satheesan said the Congress leadership followed a consultative process involving MLAs, MPs and senior party members.

Cabinet Formation to Follow Consultations

Regarding the composition of the new cabinet, Satheesan clarified that ministerial appointments would be decided after discussions with senior leaders and party leadership.

He also appealed for support from all sections of society, including opposition parties, stating that rebuilding Kerala requires collective effort and cooperation.

With the swearing-in ceremony scheduled for May 18, Kerala is set to witness a new political chapter under Satheesan’s leadership as the state prepares for a transition in governance after a decade.
