Mahaveer Singhvi

Senior Indian diplomat Mahaveer Singhvi has assumed charge as India’s new Consul General in Toronto, at a time when New Delhi and Ottawa are working to rebuild and strengthen their bilateral relationship across key sectors.

A 1999-batch Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer, Singhvi brings with him nearly 25 years of diplomatic experience. Before taking up this role, he was serving as Additional Secretary at the Ministry of External Affairs headquarters in New Delhi, where he handled important portfolios including New, Emerging and Strategic Technologies and Counter Terrorism.

His appointment comes at a crucial moment in India-Canada relations, as both countries look to move forward after a period of diplomatic strain. The Indian mission in Toronto highlighted that Singhvi’s role will focus on deepening cooperation in areas such as trade, investment, technology, education, and innovation.

In his initial remarks, Singhvi expressed his intent to work closely with Canadian stakeholders and the vibrant Indian diaspora. His approach reflects a broader effort to rebuild trust, expand partnerships, and create a forward-looking relationship based on shared values and opportunities.

The timing of his appointment is particularly significant. It follows recent efforts by both nations to reset ties, including the finalisation of a new framework aimed at boosting bilateral trade to USD 50 billion by 2030. Diplomatic engagement has also picked up pace, with both countries restoring high commissioners in each other’s capitals.

Relations between India and Canada had faced challenges in recent years, but recent political developments and leadership changes have opened the door for renewed dialogue and cooperation. Singhvi’s posting is seen as part of this larger diplomatic reset.

Soon after assuming charge, Singhvi visited the Jain Society of Toronto, where he offered prayers and reflected on values such as peace, unity, and harmony—an early gesture symbolising his intent to build bridges not just at the policy level, but also within communities.

As he steps into this important role, Singhvi is expected to play a key part in strengthening India’s engagement with Canada, fostering economic ties, and reinforcing connections with the Indian diaspora—one of the strongest pillars of the relationship.
