The West Bengal government on Wednesday appointed senior IAS officer Nandini Chakraborty (IAS:1994:WB) as the Chief Secretary of the state, making her the first woman officer to assume the top bureaucratic position.

Chakraborty succeeds Manoj Pant (IAS:1991:WB), who retired on Wednesday after completing a six-month extension. Pant was originally due to retire in June 2025 and had been serving as Chief Secretary since September 2024, following the retirement of Bhagwati Prasad Gopalika (IAS:1989:WB).
At the time of her appointment, Chakraborty was serving as Additional Chief Secretary, Home and Hills Affairs Department. She also held additional charge of the Parliamentary Affairs and Tourism departments.

During her career spanning over three decades, Chakraborty has held several key positions in the state administration. Her assignments include Additional Chief Secretary, Home and Hills Affairs; Principal Secretary to the Governor of West Bengal; Chief Executive Officer of the West Bengal Industrial Infrastructure Development Corporation; Managing Director of the West Bengal Industrial Development Corporation; and District Magistrate of Howrah. She has also served in senior roles across Industry, Information and Cultural Affairs, Sundarban Affairs, Tourism, and Biotechnology departments.

Chakraborty remained in public focus during her tenure as Principal Secretary to Governor C. V. Ananda Bose, a period marked by differences between Raj Bhavan and the state secretariat. The Governor’s office sought her release, while the state government initially directed her to continue. The matter was later resolved following discussions involving Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, after which Chakraborty was reassigned to the Tourism Department and subsequently entrusted with the Home and Hills Affairs portfolio in December 2023.

Born on February 5, 1973, in Kolkata, Chakraborty is an alumna of Lady Brabourne College and Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. She received the Jawaharlal Nehru Memorial Award in 1993 for academic excellence.
