In a key leadership transition, senior IPS officer Shashi Bhushan Kumar Singh officially assumed charge as Delhi’s new Police Commissioner on Thursday evening. A 1988-batch officer of the AGMUT cadre, the 59-year-old Singh currently serves as the Director General of Home Guards and has been entrusted with the additional responsibility of leading the Delhi Police, following the retirement of outgoing Commissioner Sanjay Arora.
Singh arrived at the Delhi Police Headquarters shortly after 4 PM, received the ceremonial guard of honour, and proceeded to his office on the 17th floor, where the handover took place in the presence of senior police officials including Special Commissioners, Joint Commissioners, and Deputy Commissioners.
A batchmate of Sanjay Arora and the youngest officer in the 1988 cadre, Singh is scheduled to retire on January 31, 2026. Notably, he becomes the first officer from the AGMUT cadre to head the Delhi Police in recent years, after a series of appointments from other state cadres — Arora from Tamil Nadu and Rakesh Asthana from Gujarat.
An alumnus of St. Stephen’s College, Delhi University, Singh completed his graduation in Physics (Hons.) before joining the Indian Police Service in 1986. He later earned an MBA in Human Resource Management from IGNOU. Over a distinguished career spanning 36 years, he has served in several critical roles in the Delhi Police and led police forces in the northeastern states of Arunachal Pradesh and Mizoram.
