In a significant development, Jagdeep Dhankhar has resigned from the post of Vice President of India with immediate effect, citing health-related reasons. The resignation was formally submitted to President Droupadi Murmu on Monday, marking an early end to his tenure, which began in August 2022.
In his resignation letter, Dhankhar stated that the decision was made to prioritise his well-being and comply with medical recommendations. “To prioritise health care and abide by medical advice, I hereby resign as the Vice-President of India, effective immediately, by Article 67(a) of the Constitution,” he wrote.
Dhankhar’s decision comes amidst reports of ongoing health challenges that have limited his public engagements in recent weeks. The Constitution of India allows the Vice President to step down from office by submitting a written resignation to the President.
Expressing heartfelt appreciation, Dhankhar conveyed gratitude to President Murmu for her constant support during his time in office. “The warmth, trust, and affection I have received from all the Hon’ble Members of Parliament would ever be cherished and embedded in my memory,” he noted, reflecting on the relationships he cultivated across party lines.
He also extended special thanks to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Union Council of Ministers, acknowledging their cooperation and encouragement. Calling the Prime Minister’s support “invaluable,” Dhankhar credited the government for fostering a productive and supportive working environment.
Reflecting on his tenure, Dhankhar said it had been a privilege to witness India’s transformation during a pivotal phase in its development. He lauded the country’s “remarkable economic progress” and “unprecedented exponential development,” noting that these achievements were a testament to the nation’s collective resolve and leadership.
“I step down with unwavering confidence in Bharat’s future. Our global rise is phenomenal, and the best is yet to come,” he concluded, signalling optimism about India’s trajectory on the world stage.
Dhankhar, a senior advocate and former Governor of West Bengal, assumed office as the 14th Vice President of India in August 2022. Known for his deep legal acumen and extensive public service record, he brought with him decades of experience in legislative and constitutional matters. His resignation marks an unexpected transition in the office of the Vice President, who also serves as the ex-officio Chairman of the Rajya Sabha.
As per constitutional protocol, the resignation has been accepted by the President. The process to elect a new Vice President is expected to be initiated by the Election Commission of India in due course.
This development is likely to trigger political consultations across parties as the nation prepares for the next appointment to one of the highest constitutional offices. Until then, Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Harivansh Narayan Singh is expected to manage procedural responsibilities in the Upper House.
