Prime Minister Narendra Modi, addressing the BRICS Outreach Summit in Brazil, emphasized the urgent need for global cooperation in Artificial Intelligence (AI) governance, stronger multilateralism, and deepened ties among Global South nations. Speaking at the session titled “Strengthening Multilateralism, Economic-Financial Matters, and Artificial Intelligence,” the Prime Minister reaffirmed India’s commitment to inclusive global development and technological responsibility.
Expressing gratitude to Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva for the invitation, Prime Minister Modi underscored the rising importance of the BRICS alliance amid an evolving global landscape. “Our shared belief in diversity and multipolarity is the BRICS group’s greatest asset,” he noted, pointing to the increasing global relevance of the platform as a response to geopolitical and economic uncertainties.
In his address, Prime Minister Modi proposed four core areas for deepening BRICS cooperation. Firstly, he highlighted the steady growth of intra-BRICS economic engagement, crediting institutions like the BRICS Business Council and BRICS Women Business Alliance for facilitating economic integration. He welcomed Brazil’s focus on international financial reforms and urged the BRICS New Development Bank (NDB) to adopt demand-driven, sustainable, and credit-conscious financing models to support development in the Global South.
Secondly, the Prime Minister emphasized the BRICS bloc’s unique potential to respond to the aspirations of the Global South. Citing the BRICS Agricultural Research Platform—established in India—as a vital tool, he proposed expanding collaboration in agri-biotech, precision farming, and climate resilience. He further suggested the establishment of a BRICS Science and Research Repository and highlighted India’s ‘One Nation, One Subscription’ initiative to promote academic equity.
Thirdly, Modi called for collective action to safeguard supply chains for critical minerals and emerging technologies, warning against their misuse for geopolitical leverage. He emphasized the need for transparent, secure, and resilient supply networks to support global technological advancement.
The fourth and central pillar of his address focused on Artificial Intelligence. Prime Minister Modi underlined AI’s transformative potential across sectors such as agriculture, healthcare, education, and governance, while simultaneously cautioning against its associated risks, bias, ethics, and misinformation. “India’s vision is clear—AI must amplify human values and potential. We follow the principle of ‘AI for All’,” he stated.
To advance global cooperation on AI governance, he called for the development of international standards to ensure digital authenticity and prevent the misuse of content. Welcoming the Leaders’ Statement on the Global Governance of AI adopted at the summit, Modi announced that India would host the AI Impact Summit in 2026, inviting all BRICS and partner nations to participate.
Reaffirming India’s role as a responsible stakeholder in global progress, Prime Minister Modi concluded by stating, “To meet the aspirations of the Global South, we must lead by example. India stands ready to work in partnership with all like-minded countries to shape a more inclusive and resilient future.”
