In a major stride towards enhancing the quality of education in urban areas, the Uttar Pradesh Urban Development Department has embarked on an ambitious initiative to establish over 2,700 smart classrooms across government schools in the state. The project, estimated to cost ₹324.56 crore, is aimed at bridging the digital divide and ensuring technology-enabled learning for students, particularly those from economically weaker sections.
According to an official statement issued on Friday, approximately 1,780 classrooms have already been completed and are fully functional. The initiative, part of several flagship government schemes, marks a significant step in digitising the learning infrastructure in urban Uttar Pradesh.

“These smart classrooms are revolutionising the learning experience by providing students with interactive, digital tools. This is empowering students and enhancing their academic engagement,” the department noted. The introduction of these facilities has also resulted in a noticeable rise in school enrollment and attendance, particularly in urban government schools.

A substantial number of the classrooms—1,183—have been developed under the Smart City Mission, with a sanctioned cost of ₹160.83 crore. Of these, 1,088 classrooms are already operational, providing modern teaching environments across several cities.

Additionally, under the ‘Kayakalp’ initiative, around 190 smart classrooms have been established with an investment of ₹57.66 crore. The initiative continues to receive additional support, with ₹4.25 crore further allocated for ongoing projects under the same scheme.

Under the Aspirational Cities programme, 913 classrooms have been sanctioned at an estimated cost of ₹29.43 crore. As of now, 408 classrooms are operational, and construction is underway for the remaining 505.
The government is also focusing on specialised educational needs through targeted programmes. Under the CM Abhyudaya Composite School Scheme, 25 advanced classrooms are being constructed. Moreover, the Vaishvik Nagaroday Yojana has approved the development of 13 smart classrooms to bolster infrastructure in selected urban centres.
An additional 398 classrooms have also received approval across various schemes, signalling a comprehensive push towards educational innovation and digital literacy.
Principal Secretary of the Urban Development Department, Mr. Amrit Abhijat, emphasised the transformative potential of this initiative. “We are redefining urban education in Uttar Pradesh. These smart classrooms are not only enabling students to engage with modern technology but are also preparing them to meet the demands of the future,” he said.
The department believes this initiative will have long-term positive impacts on the learning outcomes of students, equipping them with essential digital skills and fostering a more inclusive, forward-looking educational ecosystem.
