NIELIT’s Impact in Assam

Since 1998, NIELIT has played a crucial role in IT education in Assam, evolving into a major hub for skill development. Under the Development of the North Eastern Region by Enhancing Training and Education Capacity in the IECT Area project, multiple centres have been established, including those in Tezpur, Jorhat, Dibrugarh, Kokrajhar, Silchar, and Majuli.

Plans are underway for a permanent campus in Jagiroad, Morigaon, Assam, as part of the NIELIT Deemed-to-be University. The campus will feature a Semiconductor Technology Lab to train manpower for the TATA Semiconductor Plant, along with other courses in emerging areas of IT and Electronics.

Key Achievements and Initiatives

NIELIT Guwahati and its extension centres in Assam have trained over 1,73,000 students/beneficiaries from various sections of society under short-term and long-term courses in IT, Electronics and Emerging technologies . Additionally, NIELIT has played a vital role in the successful implementation of several capacity-building and skilling projects and schemes, providing value-added training in Information, Electronics, and Communication Technology (IECT) to target beneficiaries.

Notable projects include the development of an LMS portal for training 1,62,643 election personnel, cyber forensic training for Assam Police, AI & ML Bootcamps, and cybersecurity workshops. NIELIT has also conducted job fairs to facilitate employment opportunities for students, partnered with Kendriya Vidyalaya (KV) to provide AI/ML training to Class VIII students under the PM Shri scheme, and promoted cybersecurity education through the Cyber Shikshaa initiative.

NIELIT is also specialized in Bioinformatics and has launched two NSQF-approved programs in Data Science and Multiomics Analysis. Since 2003, over 1,000 students have been trained in these domains.

To address the growing demand for skilled manpower in the semiconductor sector, particularly for the upcoming semiconductor manufacturing unit in Jagiroad, 13 NSQFaligned courses have been designed to equip the workforce with industry-relevant skills in semiconductor Assembly Testing Manufacturing and Packaging technologies.
