Andhra Pradesh Government Approves ₹450 Crore Water Supply Scheme for Mangalagiri-Tadepalli

In a significant development aimed at strengthening urban infrastructure, the Government of Andhra Pradesh has sanctioned a ₹ 450 crore Comprehensive Water Supply Improvement Scheme for the Mangalagiri-Tadepalli Municipal Corporation (MTMC). This initiative, led by the Municipal Administration and Urban Development (MA&UD) Department, aims to ensure reliable and equitable access to safe drinking water for all areas within MTMC’s jurisdiction by 2056.

The MTMC was constituted through the amalgamation of the municipalities of Mangalagiri and Tadepalli, along with 21 adjoining villages. Of these, 15 villages are currently integrated into the municipal corporation, while six others are under consideration for merger with the Capital Region Development Authority (CRDA). The new water supply scheme is focused on meeting the growing needs of both the original urban centres and the newly incorporated peri-urban areas.

According to S. Suresh Kumar, Principal Secretary, MA&UD Department, the project is a critical step in bridging existing infrastructure gaps in the region. “This initiative is designed to ensure comprehensive and sustainable water supply coverage, especially in areas that have recently become part of the municipal corporation,” he stated.

An earlier water supply project, supported by the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB), had a sanctioned amount of ₹221.52 crore. However, its implementation faced hurdles due to funding constraints, resulting in incomplete infrastructure, particularly in the newly merged villages. In light of these challenges, a fresh Detailed Project Report (DPR) has been prepared to holistically address the shortcomings of the previous scheme.

The newly approved project will source water from the Krishna River and will include the construction of new intake points and water treatment facilities. It also plans to lay out an extensive distribution network that will serve underserved and unserved areas. In addition, the new scheme aims to complete pending works that were initiated under the earlier AIIB-backed project.

Highlighting the long-term vision of the initiative, Mr. Suresh Kumar noted, “This scheme is not just about improving infrastructure; it reflects our broader commitment to sustainable urban development and inclusive growth. Ensuring a reliable water supply is fundamental to improving the quality of life for all residents.”

The ₹450-crore allocation underlines the state government’s commitment to enhancing urban amenities in fast-growing regions like Mangalagiri-Tadepalli, which lie within the Capital Region of Andhra Pradesh. As urban populations expand and demand for essential services increases, such investments are expected to play a crucial role in ensuring resilience and sustainability.

With this project, the Andhra Pradesh government seeks to build on its broader vision for integrated urban development, while addressing past shortcomings and planning for future needs. The initiative is expected to significantly benefit thousands of residents, improve health outcomes, and contribute to the socio-economic development of the region.
