Vodafone Idea (Vi), one of India’s leading telecom service providers, has partnered strategically with global networking giant Cisco to upgrade and expand its 4G and 5G network capabilities. This initiative aims to meet the rising demand for high-speed, reliable digital connectivity in India, both for individual consumers and enterprises.
The partnership focuses on deploying a Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS)-based transport network, powered by Cisco’s advanced IP/MPLS solutions. This technology will enable Vodafone Idea to significantly enhance the performance and scalability of its existing infrastructure. It is expected to bring about notable improvements in operational efficiency, network automation, and traffic management.
Jagbir Singh, Chief Technology Officer at Vi, emphasised the significance of the collaboration, stating, “Cisco’s expertise in MPLS solutions will help us automate critical network functions, optimise traffic flows, and respond swiftly to evolving customer needs. This robust transport network is tailored to meet the complex challenges of today’s digital landscape.”

With India witnessing a surge in data consumption driven by remote work, online education, entertainment streaming, and digital commerce, Vi’s network upgrade comes at a crucial time. The enhancements are designed to offer smoother experiences for data-intensive applications such as HD video streaming, online gaming, and virtual conferencing. Additionally, enterprise users will benefit from greater network stability and security, essential for supporting a digital-first business environment.

From Cisco’s perspective, the initiative reflects a commitment to enabling future-ready digital ecosystems. Gordon Thomson, Vice President for Service Provider Sales in the EMEA region at Cisco, remarked, “Our collaboration with Vi demonstrates how Cisco’s IP/MPLS technologies can help deliver scalable, secure, and consistent digital experiences. This partnership is not just about immediate performance gains but also about preparing the network for future innovations.”

The implementation of Cisco’s MPLS-based network architecture is expected to reduce operational complexities and lower long-term costs for Vi. By leveraging software-defined tools and advanced automation, Vi aims to streamline service delivery, improve network reliability, and accelerate time-to-market for new offerings.
Both companies have underlined the broader impact of this initiative on India’s digital transformation. The upgraded network infrastructure is being positioned as a foundational investment to support emerging technologies and next-generation services, including the nationwide rollout of 5G.

Vodafone Idea, a joint venture between the Aditya Birla Group and Vodafone Group, possesses extensive spectrum holdings across India, including significant allocations in the 5G band. Meanwhile, Cisco brings decades of global experience in networking technology and infrastructure to this collaborative venture.
The phased rollout of the upgraded network will take place over the coming months. It is aligned with India’s growing dependence on digital connectivity and the government’s push toward building a digitally empowered society. As the telecom sector continues to evolve rapidly, such partnerships are expected to play a pivotal role in shaping the country’s digital future.
