
Amit Sharma, Secretary to Government, Information, Communications & Technology (ICT) and Cooperation, Mizoram, highlighted the significant role of the Cooperation Department in driving success across allied sectors such as Agriculture, Horticulture, Animal Husbandry, and Fisheries. Speaking at the State Credit Seminar, chaired by Chief Minister Lalduhoma, Sharma emphasised that cooperative frameworks are essential for sustainable rural and economic development. The event witnessed participation from two cabinet ministers, senior bankers, SLBC coordinators, Lead District Managers (LDMs), and developmental agencies, including NGOs.
During his address, Sharma underscored the significance of the International Year of Cooperatives (IYC) 2025, as designated by the United Nations. He announced that a series of awareness and sensitisation drives will be conducted across all districts of Mizoram, spearheaded by the Cooperation Department and the Registrar of Cooperative Societies (RCS) Office. These initiatives form part of an annual calendar of events to ensure IYC is implemented effectively throughout the year.

Sharma also shared insights on Mizoram’s cooperative sector contributions, revealing that cooperative membership as a percentage of the population is highest in Kerala (77%), followed by Karnataka (50%), while Mizoram currently stands at just 4%. He expressed confidence that the numbers will improve in the coming months. Additionally, he highlighted progress under the PACS computerization scheme, where 25 PACS from Mizoram have successfully achieved Go-Live status, earning recognition from the Ministry of Cooperation.

The seminar also marked the release of the State Focus Paper for Mizoram 2025-26 by NABARD in the presence of the Chief Minister and other dignitaries. The Chief Minister commended progressive initiatives across various sectors, including the Apex Cooperative Bank of Mizoram.
Pankaja Borah, General Manager (OIC), NABARD, Mizoram Regional Office, elaborated on the State Focus Paper’s role in development planning. She emphasized the critical role of credit accessibility and financial enablers in transforming Mizoram’s rural economy.
