The Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE), under the Ministry of Power, has urged states to participate actively in the upcoming National Energy Conservation Week, slated for December 14 to 20. This initiative is a key element of India’s mission to address the twin challenges of environmental degradation and climate change by promoting energy conservation and efficiency.

BEE Secretary Milind Deora, speaking on Sunday, emphasised the critical nature of climate change and its far-reaching effects on ecosystems, economies, and human livelihoods. He stressed the urgent need for a collective national effort to address greenhouse gas emissions, deforestation, and pollution, with governments, industries, and individuals working together to develop and implement energy-saving measures.

Highlighting the importance of local solutions, Deora called on states to devise region-specific action plans to ensure effective implementation. Commending the southern states, particularly Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, for their proactive efforts, he pointed to their innovative initiatives as examples of commitment to sustainability.

In Andhra Pradesh, the Special Chief Secretary of Energy has collaborated with the School Education Department to engage students in energy conservation activities. A statewide short video competition titled “Bright Ideas and Brighter Future” has been launched for students in grades 8 to 10, encouraging creative contributions with attractive prizes as incentives.

Similarly, Telangana has demonstrated a strong commitment to advancing energy efficiency, furthering BEE’s vision of accelerating efforts across sectors like agriculture, industry, IT, transport, Panchayat Raj, and urban and rural development to align with India’s sustainable development goals.

A. Chandrasekhar Reddy, Adviser for Southern States and Union Territories at BEE, commended the southern states’ leadership in energy conservation, underlining their role in setting benchmarks for other regions.

The National Energy Conservation Week aims to spark awareness and action nationwide, underscoring the critical role of energy efficiency in preserving natural resources for future generations. With widespread participation and innovative strategies, India continues to take meaningful strides toward sustainable development.
