Bengaluru Streetlight CCMS Opens First Control Room

The Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) opened Bengaluru’s first centralised IoT streetlight control room in Jayanagar on 6 November 2026, inaugurated by Bengaluru Development Minister Krishna Byre Gowda with Jayanagar MLA CK Ramamurthy. The Bengaluru streetlight CCMS links energy-efficient LED lights to dashboards that auto-detect faults and alert maintenance teams without waiting for resident complaints.

Five dedicated control rooms are planned across Greater Bengaluru. The Jayanagar facility is the first to go live, under Bengaluru South City Corporation. The citywide project covers 5,00,381 LED streetlights—3,02,919 newly installed and 1,97,432 existing LEDs integrated with the Centralised Control and Monitoring System (CCMS)—through 24,677 CCMS units, according to reporting by the Times of India.

How the Bengaluru streetlight CCMS detects faults

Each CCMS unit typically controls about 40 streetlights. The system is preloaded with expected electricity use for that group and continuously compares it with actual consumption once lights are on. A drop that indicates one or more failed lamps triggers a dashboard alert for the affected cluster. GPS tracking helps field teams locate the fault.

Operators can schedule on and off times, track assets by GPS, monitor real-time electricity use, and flag lights that are out, flickering or only partly lit. GBA has set a 24–48 hour window for repairs after a fault is detected or a complaint is registered; contractors who miss the deadline face automatic penalties.

South City scale and citywide energy savings

Within Bengaluru South City Corporation limits, the project covers 1,25,947 streetlights. Of these, 75,729 are newly installed LEDs and 50,218 existing LEDs are on CCMS, served by 5,223 CCMS units through three concessionaires. Local reports note the Jayanagar control room monitors lights across 71 wards in that jurisdiction.

The rollout is expected to cut energy use by more than 54%. Annual operation and maintenance for streetlights used to cost about ₹500 crore; Byre Gowda said the city expects to save ₹100–150 crore a year once the system is installed across Greater Bengaluru.

The move sits alongside other GBA digital and institutional steps this month, including the appointment of K. Lakshmipriya as GBA Special Commissioner and work to digitise Bengaluru’s TDR system for road widening.

Why IoT streetlight monitoring matters for smart cities

Faulty streetlights have long ranked among the most common civic grievances. Shifting from complaint-driven repairs to consumption-based alerts shortens dark stretches on arterial and neighbourhood roads and makes concessionaire performance measurable. Similar command-centre models are spreading: Telangana plans to run 26 towns from one AI command and control centre in Khammam, while vendors continue to push shared municipal AI infrastructure for smart cities.

The streetlight programme also follows the state’s broader capital push for the city under the Karnataka Budget 2026 infrastructure package for Bengaluru. Deccan Herald covered the same inauguration, noting the system’s ability to flag problems automatically before residents escalate them.

Key takeaways

  • GBA opened the first Bengaluru streetlight CCMS control room in Jayanagar on 6 November 2026; five such rooms are planned citywide.
  • The project covers 5,00,381 LED streetlights and 24,677 CCMS units, with expected energy savings above 54% and O&M savings of ₹100–150 crore a year.
  • Each CCMS unit watches about 40 lights; consumption drops trigger dashboard alerts, with a 24–48 hour repair window and automatic contractor penalties.

FAQ

What is Bengaluru streetlight CCMS?

It is an IoT-based Centralised Control and Monitoring System that links LED streetlights to control-room dashboards so faults, flickering and abnormal power use are detected automatically.

How many streetlights does the South City control room cover?

Bengaluru South City Corporation’s project covers 1,25,947 streetlights, including 75,729 newly installed LEDs and 50,218 existing LEDs on CCMS, with 5,223 CCMS units.

How fast must faults be fixed?

GBA has set a 24–48 hour window after a fault is detected or a complaint is registered; contractors who miss the deadline face automatic penalties.
