The United States has announced plans to deepen its strategic partnership with India by expanding cooperation in defence, civil nuclear energy, artificial intelligence (AI) and other emerging technologies. The move reflects the growing importance of the India-US relationship in strengthening economic growth, technological collaboration and resilient supply chains in the Indo-Pacific region.
The announcement was made by S. Paul Kapur, US Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asian Affairs, during a roundtable discussion on India at the Hoover Institution.
US Focuses on Stronger Strategic Partnership With India
Speaking at the event, Kapur said the current US administration is committed to broadening engagement with India across key strategic sectors. He noted that closer collaboration would not only strengthen bilateral ties but also create economic opportunities and reinforce trusted supply chains for both countries.
The discussion was attended by former US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and former US Ambassador to India David C. Mulford.
Cooperation to Expand Across Key Sectors
According to Kapur, the next phase of India-US collaboration will focus on several high-priority areas, including:
- Defence cooperation
- Civil nuclear energy
- Trusted Artificial Intelligence (AI)
- Emerging technologies
- Critical supply chains
He said stronger cooperation in these sectors would support innovation, improve technological capabilities and contribute to long-term economic growth for both nations.
Defence Partnership Continues to Grow
India and the United States have steadily expanded their defence partnership over the past two decades. Last year, both countries signed a new defence cooperation framework aimed at enhancing collaboration across land, sea, air, space and cyberspace domains.
The agreement is expected to improve interoperability between the armed forces of the two countries while strengthening regional security and strategic coordination.
US Defence Platforms Strengthen India’s Capabilities
The United States has emerged as one of India’s major defence partners. Since 2002, India has inducted several advanced American defence platforms into its armed forces, including:
- Apache attack helicopters
- Chinook heavy-lift helicopters
- C-17 Globemaster III transport aircraft
- C-130J Super Hercules transport aircraft
- P-8I maritime patrol aircraft
- M777 ultra-light howitzers
These acquisitions have significantly enhanced India’s defence capabilities across multiple operational domains.
Civil Nuclear Cooperation Gains Momentum
The civil nuclear partnership between the two countries is also gathering pace. Earlier this year, a delegation of senior executives from the US nuclear industry visited India to explore collaboration opportunities with Indian companies.
The discussions followed recent reforms to India’s nuclear liability framework, which are expected to facilitate greater participation by international companies in the country’s civil nuclear sector.
