The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has appointed senior Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer Anjani Kumar as the next Ambassador of India to Ukraine, strengthening India’s diplomatic presence in the East European nation. Kumar, a 2003-batch IFS officer, is currently serving as Joint Secretary at the MEA Headquarters and is expected to assume his new assignment shortly.

His appointment comes at a time when India continues to maintain active diplomatic engagement with Ukraine while pursuing a balanced foreign policy amid the ongoing regional conflict.
Experienced Diplomat Takes on New Assignment

According to an official statement issued by the Ministry of External Affairs, Anjani Kumar has been selected to represent India in Ukraine after serving in key positions at the ministry’s headquarters.

A career diplomat with over two decades of experience, Kumar has handled a range of diplomatic and policy assignments during his tenure in the Indian Foreign Service. His appointment reflects the government’s continued focus on strengthening India’s diplomatic outreach in strategically important regions.
India-Ukraine Ties Continue to Grow

India and Ukraine have maintained diplomatic relations since 1992, with cooperation spanning trade, education, pharmaceuticals, and cultural exchanges.
Bilateral engagement gained renewed attention following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Ukraine in August 2024, the first-ever visit by an Indian Prime Minister to the country. The visit reaffirmed India’s commitment to dialogue, peace, and stronger cooperation with Ukraine.
As India’s new envoy, Anjani Kumar is expected to play an important role in further enhancing bilateral ties and expanding cooperation in areas of mutual interest.
