The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has appointed senior Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer Vishvas Vidu Sapkal as the next Ambassador of India to the Slovak Republic, further strengthening India’s diplomatic engagement with Central Europe.

Sapkal, a 1998-batch IFS officer, is currently serving as India’s Ambassador to Peru and is expected to assume his new responsibilities in Slovakia in the coming weeks.
Experienced Diplomat Gets New Assignment

The appointment marks another important milestone in Sapkal’s diplomatic career spanning more than two decades. Over the years, he has represented India in several strategic regions and handled a wide range of bilateral and multilateral engagements.

The Ministry of External Affairs, in an official statement, announced that Sapkal has been selected to serve as India’s envoy to Slovakia and will take up the assignment shortly.
Wide International Experience

During his diplomatic career, Sapkal has held several significant positions abroad. He previously served as India’s High Commissioner to Fiji and concurrently represented India in Cook Islands, Kiribati, Nauru, Tonga, Tuvalu and Vanuatu.
He has also served as Consul General of India in St. Petersburg, Russia, and has worked in Indian missions across Russia, Armenia, Egypt and the United States.
His extensive international experience is expected to contribute to strengthening India-Slovakia relations across trade, technology, education and people-to-people exchanges.
Key Roles at the Ministry of External Affairs
At the MEA headquarters, Sapkal has handled several important assignments. He has worked in the Northern Division, MER Division and Finance Division and has held senior positions including Joint Secretary (BIMSTEC, SAARC and Nalanda) and Joint Secretary (South).
He also briefly served as Joint Secretary responsible for Indo-Pacific affairs, an increasingly important area in India’s foreign policy framework.
Associated with Major International Initiatives
Sapkal has been part of several high-profile diplomatic engagements and international events.
He contributed to the India-Africa Forum Summit in 2015 and played a role in organizing the 12th World Hindi Conference held in Fiji in 2023. He was also associated with the third Summit of the Forum for India-Pacific Islands Cooperation (FIPIC) hosted in Papua New Guinea in 2023.
His experience across diverse diplomatic assignments has made him one of the senior officers in India’s foreign service.

Strengthening India-Slovakia Ties
India and Slovakia maintain friendly bilateral relations with growing cooperation in trade, investment, science and technology, education and cultural exchanges. Sapkal’s appointment is expected to further deepen engagement between the two countries and explore new opportunities for collaboration.
