The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has approved the reappointment of senior advocate Tushar Mehta as Solicitor General of India for another three-year term, ensuring continuity in the Union Government’s legal representation before the courts.


According to a notification issued by the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) on June 20, Mehta’s fresh tenure will commence from July 1, 2026.

Tushar Mehta to Continue as Solicitor General


With the latest approval, Tushar Mehta will continue to serve as the country’s Solicitor General, the second-highest law officer of the Government of India after the Attorney General.


Having assumed office in 2018, Mehta has played a key role in representing the Union Government in several important constitutional, administrative and policy-related matters before the Supreme Court and various High Courts.

By the completion of his newly approved tenure, he is set to complete nearly eleven years in the position, making him one of the longest-serving Solicitors General in the country’s legal history.


Three Additional Solicitors General Reappointed

The ACC has also approved the reappointment of three Additional Solicitors General for a further term of three years with effect from July 30, 2026.

The officers include:

  • Suryaprakash V. Raju
  • N. Venkataraman
  • Aishwarya Bhati

All three have been representing the Union Government in various legal matters and will continue in their respective roles under the renewed tenure.

Two Supreme Court ASGs Get Fresh Term

In a separate decision, the ACC approved the reappointment of two Additional Solicitors General serving before the Supreme Court.

The officers are:

  • Vikramjit Banerjee
  • K.M. Nataraj

Both have been granted a fresh three-year tenure with effect from July 30, 2026.

Chetan Sharma Gets Six-Month Extension

The government has also extended the tenure of Chetan Sharma, Additional Solicitor General for the Delhi High Court.

His tenure has been extended for six months from July 1, 2026, or until further orders, whichever is earlier.

Ensuring Continuity in Government’s Legal Team

The reappointments are aimed at maintaining stability and continuity in the government’s legal leadership at a time when several important constitutional, commercial and policy-related matters are being heard across courts.

The decisions reflect the Centre’s confidence in the existing legal team and its contribution to representing the government in key judicial proceedings.
