Bihar-Born Kanishka Narayan Appointed UK Minister for Artificial Intelligence

In a proud moment for the Indian diaspora, Kanishka Narayan, who was born in Muzaffarpur, Bihar, has been appointed as the United Kingdom‘s Minister for Artificial Intelligence. The 36-year-old Labour Party leader was inducted into the UK Cabinet as part of Prime Minister Andy Burnham‘s government reshuffle.

His appointment marks another milestone in the growing contribution of people of Indian origin to global leadership and technology-driven governance.

From Muzaffarpur to the UK Cabinet

Born in Bihar’s Muzaffarpur, Kanishka Narayan later moved to the United Kingdom, where he pursued his education and built a career in public service.

One of the defining moments of his early life, as he recalls on his official website, was applying for a scholarship to Eton College with the encouragement of a school teacher who believed in his potential. That support, coupled with his determination, played an important role in shaping his academic and professional journey.

First Ethnic Minority MP from a Welsh Constituency

Narayan currently represents Vale of Glamorgan in Wales as a Labour Member of Parliament. He holds the distinction of being the first ethnic minority MP to represent the constituency.

Before entering frontline politics, he worked as an economist and later served as a senior adviser to Cabinet ministers and the Prime Minister in the UK’s Business Department and Cabinet Office. His experience in public policy, economic affairs and government administration has helped establish him as a key voice in technology and innovation.

To Lead UK’s AI Agenda

As the new Minister for Artificial Intelligence, Narayan will be responsible for supporting the UK’s AI strategy and encouraging the responsible adoption of emerging technologies across sectors. His role is expected to focus on promoting innovation, strengthening digital capabilities and ensuring artificial intelligence contributes to economic growth and better public services.

His appointment comes at a time when governments across the world are increasing investments in AI to drive digital transformation and improve governance.

A Proud Moment for the Indian Diaspora

Kanishka Narayan’s elevation to the UK Cabinet has drawn attention in India, particularly in Bihar, where his journey from Muzaffarpur to one of the most important technology-focused ministerial roles in the British government is being seen as an inspiring achievement.

His appointment reflects the increasing global recognition of Indian-origin professionals and leaders, who continue to play significant roles in politics, technology and policymaking across the world.
