GW Data Centre

Uttar Pradesh is looking to strengthen its position in India’s fast-growing digital infrastructure sector, with Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath setting a target of adding more than 2 gigawatts (GW) of data centre capacity in the state by 2030.

The announcement was made during a review meeting of the Uttar Pradesh Data Centre Policy-2021, where the Chief Minister directed officials to prepare a new policy framework aimed at attracting greater investment and accelerating the growth of the sector.

Focus on Building a Digital Infrastructure Hub

Highlighting the importance of emerging technologies in shaping the future economy, Adityanath said that data, artificial intelligence (AI) and digital infrastructure will play a critical role in driving economic growth and innovation in the coming years.

He emphasized that Uttar Pradesh must make timely investments and policy interventions to establish itself as a leading destination for data centre development and digital infrastructure projects.

According to officials, the state’s vision is to create a strong ecosystem that can support growing demand for data storage, cloud services, AI applications and digital platforms.

New Policy to Align with Industry Needs

During the meeting, the Chief Minister instructed officials to draft a revised data centre policy that is more practical, investor-friendly and aligned with the evolving requirements of the technology industry.

The proposed policy is expected to focus on simplifying procedures, improving ease of doing business and creating a favourable environment for domestic and global investors. The government aims to ensure that Uttar Pradesh remains competitive in attracting large-scale digital infrastructure investments.

Officials believe that a modern policy framework will help accelerate project approvals, encourage private sector participation and strengthen investor confidence.

Data Centres Emerging as Growth Drivers

The planned expansion reflects the increasing importance of data centres in supporting digital services, e-governance, fintech, cloud computing and artificial intelligence applications.

As businesses and government services become increasingly digital, demand for secure and reliable data storage infrastructure continues to grow. Data centres are now considered essential infrastructure for supporting the digital economy and enabling technological innovation.

The state government views the sector as a key contributor to future economic development, employment generation and technology-driven growth.

Potential for Investment and Employment

Industry experts note that data centre projects often attract substantial investments while creating opportunities across construction, engineering, information technology, operations and maintenance services.

The proposed capacity addition is expected to generate economic activity, attract technology companies and support the development of related industries. It could also strengthen Uttar Pradesh’s position as a preferred destination for digital infrastructure investments in northern India.

Strengthening Uttar Pradesh’s Digital Vision

The target of adding more than 2 GW of data centre capacity by 2030 forms part of the state’s broader strategy to build a robust digital ecosystem and prepare for future technological demands.
