The National Internet Exchange of India (NIXI) is set to celebrate its 23rd Foundation Day on June 19, 2026, highlighting more than two decades of contributions to India’s digital infrastructure and internet growth. The event will bring together policymakers, technology leaders, industry representatives, academicians and members of the internet community to reflect on the organisation’s journey and future roadmap.

The celebrations will be attended by Shri S. Krishnan, IAS, Secretary, Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) and Chairman of NIXI, as the Chief Guest. Shri Sushil Pal, Joint Secretary, MeitY, along with senior government officials and stakeholders from the digital ecosystem, will also participate in the event.
Key Role in India’s Digital Growth

Established under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, NIXI has played a crucial role in building and strengthening India’s internet infrastructure. The organisation manages the country’s ‘.IN’ and ‘.भारत’ domain registries, facilitates domestic internet traffic exchange through Internet Exchange Points (IXPs), and oversees the allocation of IP addresses through the Indian Registry for Internet Names and Numbers (IRINN).

Over the years, NIXI has emerged as an important institution supporting the growth of a secure, reliable and inclusive internet ecosystem across the country.
AI-Powered WHOIS Platform to be Launched

As part of the Foundation Day celebrations, NIXI will introduce an AI-powered WHOIS screening platform designed to enhance trust and security within India’s ‘.IN’ domain ecosystem.
The new platform is expected to strengthen domain verification processes and improve the overall reliability of India’s internet infrastructure by leveraging advanced artificial intelligence capabilities.
Growth of the .IN Domain Ecosystem
NIXI currently manages more than 3.9 million ‘.IN’ domain names, placing India among the leading country-code top-level domain registries globally.
The organisation has also supported initiatives to strengthen online security, including facilitating the migration of banking platforms to the ‘.bank.in’ domain space. These efforts are aimed at enhancing trust and safety for internet users and digital service providers.
Driving IPv6 Adoption and Internet Resilience
The organisation continues to play an important role in expanding IPv6 adoption across the country. According to NIXI, IPv6 penetration in India has reached approximately 78.34 per cent, helping create a future-ready network infrastructure capable of supporting growing digital demand.
NIXI also operates 79 Internet Exchange Points (IXPs) across India, enabling faster and more efficient routing of domestic internet traffic while reducing dependency on international routes.
Promoting Multilingual Internet Access
In line with its vision of digital inclusion, NIXI supports domain registrations in 22 Indian languages. This initiative has helped expand internet accessibility and encouraged greater participation from users across diverse linguistic communities.
By promoting local-language internet adoption, NIXI is contributing to a more inclusive digital environment and helping bridge language barriers in the online space.
New Initiatives to Strengthen Digital Infrastructure
During the Foundation Day event, NIXI will unveil several initiatives focused on improving service delivery, automation, operational efficiency and domain security.
The organisation will also recognise the contributions of various partners and stakeholders who have supported the development of India’s internet ecosystem over the years.
Commitment to a Future-Ready Digital India
As India continues its journey toward becoming a digitally empowered society and knowledge-driven economy, NIXI remains focused on expanding the adoption of ‘.IN’ and ‘.भारत’ domains, enhancing internet resilience and supporting secure digital growth.
With new technology-driven initiatives and continued investments in internet infrastructure, NIXI aims to play an even larger role in enabling India’s digital future.
