NTPC Limited has elevated senior executive Atul Kamalakar Desai to the position of Executive Director (Senior Management), marking a significant milestone in his nearly 37-year journey with India’s largest power generation company.

The appointment took effect on June 8, 2026, and forms part of NTPC’s latest leadership elevation exercise involving 34 senior officials. The company informed stock exchanges about the appointments through a regulatory filing in compliance with SEBI disclosure requirements.
Nearly Four Decades of Service at NTPC

Atul Kamalakar Desai joined NTPC on September 5, 1989, and has spent more than three and a half decades contributing to the organisation’s growth and operations.

Throughout his career, he has worked across several critical functions of the power utility, gaining extensive experience in plant operations, maintenance and business leadership. His long association with NTPC reflects deep institutional knowledge and operational expertise built over the years.
Experience Across Core Power Operations

Desai has handled a variety of responsibilities during his tenure, including assignments in Operations and Maintenance (O&M), plant operations, mechanical maintenance and business unit management.
His work has involved ensuring efficient power plant performance, maintaining operational reliability and overseeing critical infrastructure. Over the years, he has played an important role in supporting the smooth functioning of NTPC’s power generation assets.
His experience as a Business Unit Head further strengthened his leadership credentials by giving him responsibility for managing operational activities and organisational performance at the plant level.
Strong Technical Background
A Mechanical Engineering graduate, Desai holds a Bachelor of Engineering (B.E.) degree in Mechanical Engineering.
His technical foundation, combined with decades of hands-on experience in power generation operations, has contributed to his professional growth within the organisation.
Industry observers note that leadership roles in large power utilities often require a blend of technical expertise and managerial capability, qualities that Desai has developed throughout his career.
Part of NTPC’s Leadership Elevation Exercise
The company has promoted 34 officials to the Executive Director (Senior Management) level as part of its latest senior leadership appointments.
According to NTPC, the appointments became effective from June 8, 2026. The elevation exercise is aimed at strengthening the organisation’s leadership structure and preparing experienced executives for higher responsibilities.
The details were communicated to stock exchanges through a filing signed by Company Secretary and Compliance Officer Ritu Arora.
