Rajnath Singh

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Tuesday released a comprehensive strategy document titled Defence Forces Vision 2047: A Roadmap for a Future‑Ready Indian Military, outlining India’s long-term plan to modernise its armed forces and strengthen national security by the centenary year of independence in 2047.

The vision document, prepared by the Headquarters Integrated Defence Staff, was unveiled during an event at South Block in New Delhi. It sets out a roadmap to transform India’s military into a modern, integrated and technologically advanced force capable of addressing future security challenges.

A Blueprint for a Modern Military

According to the Ministry of Defence, the roadmap focuses on major strategic reforms, capability development, and organisational changes required to strengthen India’s defence preparedness in an evolving geopolitical environment.

The document envisions the Indian armed forces becoming a multi-domain and agile military force capable of operating effectively across land, sea, air, cyber and space domains.

A key goal of the roadmap is to enhance jointness and coordination among the three services — the Indian Army, Indian Navy and Indian Air Force. Greater integration in planning, operations and capability development is expected to improve overall operational efficiency.

Focus on Technology and Innovation

The vision document highlights the growing role of advanced technologies, innovation and modern training systems in preparing the military for future warfare.

Emerging domains such as artificial intelligence, cyber security, space capabilities and autonomous systems are expected to play an increasingly important role in defence strategy.

The roadmap also stresses the need to strengthen research, development and technological innovation to ensure the armed forces remain equipped with cutting-edge capabilities.

Push for Defence Self-Reliance

A major focus of the roadmap is boosting self-reliance in defence production under the government’s Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative.

The document encourages greater development and adoption of indigenous defence technologies and platforms tailored to India’s strategic needs. Expanding domestic defence manufacturing is expected not only to improve military preparedness but also contribute to economic growth and technological advancement.

Phased Strategy for Capability Development

The roadmap outlines a phased approach to defence modernisation, identifying:

  • Short-term priorities for immediate capability upgrades

  • Mid-term goals for strengthening operational readiness

  • Long-term objectives for building a globally competitive military force

This structured framework will guide reforms, technological investments and strategic partnerships needed to develop a world-class defence ecosystem.

Whole-of-Nation Approach to Security

Recognising the changing nature of global security challenges, the document also promotes a whole-of-nation approach to national defence.

It highlights the importance of integrating military strength with diplomatic, technological and economic capabilities to safeguard India’s strategic interests and global presence.

Senior Military Leadership Present

Several senior defence officials attended the release event, including:

  • Anil Chauhan

  • Dinesh K Tripathi

  • AP Singh

  • Rajesh Kumar Singh

Towards a Stronger India by 2047

By 2047, the roadmap aims to position India’s armed forces as a globally respected, technologically advanced and combat-ready military.

The vision aligns with India’s broader national objective of building a strong, secure and developed nation — a “Viksit Bharat” — by the 100th year of independence.
