Union Minister for Electronics & Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw announced that India will add 20,000 GPUs to its existing base of 38,000 GPUs to further strengthen the country’s artificial intelligence infrastructure. The announcement was made on the second day of the India AI Impact Summit 2026 in New Delhi, marking the next phase of India’s national AI strategy.
The Minister said the expansion is intended to scale compute capacity while ensuring responsible AI deployment in areas such as healthcare, education and public services. He noted that India’s approach focuses on democratising access to AI infrastructure rather than concentrating it among a few organisations, aligning with the broader vision of inclusive technology adoption.
The media interaction was attended by Jitin Prasada, Minister of State for Electronics & IT and Commerce & Industry; S. Krishnan, Secretary, Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology; and Abhishek Singh, CEO of the IndiaAI Mission. The Summit, being held from 16–20 February, has brought together global technology leaders, policymakers, researchers, startups and students to discuss AI innovation and deployment.
Vaishnaw highlighted that India expects more than $200 billion in investments over the next two years, with venture capital participation across all layers of the AI ecosystem. He stressed that collaboration between industry, academia and government will be key to managing this technological transition, alongside efforts to reskill the existing workforce, build new talent pipelines and prepare future generations for emerging technologies.
Referring to sustainability, the Minister noted that about 51 percent of India’s power generation capacity comes from clean sources, providing an advantage in powering AI infrastructure. He also pointed to research aimed at reducing energy and water consumption of data centres, with emerging solutions capable of lowering energy use by up to 35 percent.
The Minister added that India’s sovereign AI models unveiled at the Summit have performed strongly against global benchmarks, and initiatives such as the AI Safety Institute are working on techno-legal frameworks to prevent misuse of AI technologies.
Officials said the expanded compute capacity, combined with skilling initiatives and semiconductor development under the national mission, is expected to accelerate innovation, support deep-tech startups and enable large-scale adoption of AI across sectors.
