Election Commission of India (ECI)

The Election Commission of India (ECI) has appointed a total of 45 senior officers from the Gujarat cadre—35 IAS and 10 IPS officers – as election observers for the forthcoming Assembly elections in Assam, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal and Puducherry. The move is part of the Commission’s standard practice to ensure free, fair and transparent conduct of elections across poll-bound states.

According to sources in the state government, the selected officers will be deputed to different constituencies to closely monitor the electoral process, including polling arrangements, law and order, expenditure oversight and compliance with the Model Code of Conduct.

Training to Begin in February

The officers will undergo mandatory training in the first week of February before taking charge of their election-related responsibilities. During their deputation, the Gujarat government will make interim administrative arrangements by assigning additional charge to other officers to ensure that day-to-day governance in the state remains unaffected.

Officials said the state government has formally communicated with the selected officers, directing them to report to the Election Commission as per the schedule issued.

Officials indicated that suitable arrangements will be made to maintain administrative continuity across departments during the officers’ absence.

Observer System Central to Electoral Integrity

The deployment of experienced IAS and IPS officers as election observers is a cornerstone of the ECI’s election management framework.
