Kavach 4.0, the latest version of the indigenously developed Automatic Train Protection system, has been commissioned on the Bajwa (Vadodara)–Ahmedabad rail section in Gujarat. The 96-km stretch is the first Kavach-enabled section in the state under Version 4.0 and covers 17 stations.
The project includes the installation of 23 towers, 20 Kavach huts, 192 km of optical fibre cable and 2,872 RFID tags. The first Kavach-enabled service on the route was the Sankalp Fast Passenger (59549/59550), operated with WAP-7 locomotives and 11 LHB coaches.
With this commissioning, Kavach is now operational on over 2,200 route kilometres across the country. Developed by Indian Railways, Kavach is designed to prevent accidents by addressing Signal Passed at Danger incidents, enforcing automatic speed control, supervising permanent and sectional speed restrictions, and providing protection against head-on and rear-end collisions. The system also includes an SOS feature and automatic whistling at level crossings.
Kavach is certified to Safety Integrity Level-4, among the highest safety standards in railway signalling. It assists loco pilots by automatically applying brakes when speed limits are breached or safety conditions are compromised, including during adverse weather.

Kavach Version 4.0 was approved after operational experience and independent safety assessments, and cleared by Research Designs and Standards Organisation. Enhancements include improved location accuracy, better signal aspect handling in complex station yards, station-to-station communication through optical fibre, and direct integration with existing electronic interlocking systems.
The system has also been certified by an Independent Safety Assessor to meet global safety standards. The commissioning on the Bajwa–Ahmedabad section adds to the ongoing deployment of indigenous railway safety technologies aimed at improving operational reliability and passenger safety across the national rail network.
